Work experience is a semester (10 variable credits) course that can be taken for no more than 2 years (40 variable credits maximum). Variable credit means credits received depends on hours worked. The more hours worked, the more credit you receive. Credits received are considered Practical Arts credit.
Credits are earned on the basis of one unit for every 36 units verified working hours at an acceptable job site. A maximum of 10 units per semester and 20 units per year can be earned. Of course, it will be necessary to get passing grades form both the employer and the Work Experience Coordinator in order to obtain credit(s). Verified hours means that hours must be documented. This election must be made before the first quarter grading period, and if the student is under the age of 18, parental approval must be obtained on the proper form.
- EMPLOYER EVALUATION - A semester written evaluation of work performance, with a grade, must be signed by a job supervisor and on file in the work experience office before credit can be awarded. The Work Experience Coordinator will visit your job and talk with your supervisor once each semester. Forms are usually left behind and are YOUR responsibility to return the forms to the teacher. (Evaluations should be reviewed with the student by the employer) Any problems on the job should be discussed with the Work Experience Coordinator.
- TIME CARDS - Time sheets are issued by the Work Experience Office and must be turned in every 6 weeks. Sheets must be properly documented and signed by work supervisor. Attention must be given to accuracy and neatness of sheets. Hours are to be rounded off to the nearest half-hour.
