academy_1The Academy provides students with academic education as well as knowledge about the “real world.”  We have award ceremonies, senior yearbooks, luncheons, and field trips. The seniors of the Academy get an additional graduation and are joined with Woodside High Business Technology Academy in the honorable ceremo ny. The Academy provides three y ears of computer application training in a Pentium lab.  It also gives college credits for those classes at Canada, CSM, and Skyline Colleges.  College and the SAT preparation are integrated into the curriculum, as well as integrated curricula lessons.

The Academy teachers are involved with each student in the Academy. The teachers care and want you to have a successful future. The Academy is a school-within-a-school. The teachers are able to give their students individual attention because the average size of a class is 25 students or less.

THE MENTOR PROGRAM

Mentorship:

The Academy’s Junior Mentor Program is awesome! The juniors are queried as to their aspirations about college, career, community contribution, and hobbies. Community business leaders and other important community members are then matched with our students to form a partnership during the year.

Benefits to mentor are:

  • pride in helping a junior who has little support presently,
  • connection to the next generation,
  • attending regular luncheons to talk with their mentees,
  • having mentee visit them at work or perhaps to go to a major league baseball game,
  • being a professional role model for a student who has none,
  • giving back to the community in a great way,
  • help break down stereotypes and hindrances among diverse people,
  • guidance in the areas of additional education, motivation, and career choice,
  • to learn about high school culture and to see what students experience today, and,
  • to be a great listener to a young adult who needs to communicate.

For Sophomores:

As a sophomore you will have a lot to look forward to.  Your first year will include field trips and building friendships with new and seasoned Academy students.

Juniors:

As a junior, you will be partnered with a business mentor who you will have all year.  Having a mentor really gives you an outlook on the career that you want to pursue. You will have mentor luncheons and possible internships will be offered to you.

Seniors:

The last year in high school is the most exciting year in school, and in the Academy you will enjoy it even more.  You will get your own Academy senior yearbook, a senior graduation trip, and the Academy gives you your own separate and additional graduation.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT US!

"Upon reviewing the admits to Stanford this year, I recognized that one of three admits is an Academy student.  Kudos to our Academy program for doing such a wonderful job in guiding and nuturing their students." -Connie Dominquez, Director of College Advising (regarding Atziry Guiterrez, class of 2007)

"Barbara and I wanted to thank you again for the wonderful opportunity to work with your students.  You truly have remarkable young adults on campus" -Erin Dwyer, Vice President of Operations, The Job Journey

"I am glad your students enjoyed their trip. It was a pleasure hosting them. I was able to have some one on one conversations with some of the students and I am convinced of their endless potential to do great things!  I also received feedback from the various departments as they were equally impressed with the students!"

-Aikane Lewis, Kaiser Permanente, Volunteer Services

"I’ve always enjoyed working with high school students.  I find the spirited students,  many of which are found in the Academy program, much more challenging but also more interesting.  Each has a story to tell, most have had more challenges in their lives than most people have in a lifetime.  It’s rewarding to watch students as they develop academic and life skills through their years in the Academy.  Success comes to many students who lack confidence and have a hard time believing that they are intelligent and capable.  The family-like atmosphere of the Academy offers just the kind of support and nurturing that will turn these students around.  Those who trust in the program’s process emerge in junior and senior year with new found confidence.  Internships and the hands-on experiential methods of the Academy program promote learning for all students."

-Wendy Mudd, Carlmont High School Academy Guidance Counselor

"I am very inspired by the supporters of the Business Academy and the students as well. I feel very privileged in being part of your program and hope to continue making a difference for your students for a long time."

-Richard A Villareal, Financial Education & Community Relations, San Mateo Credit Union

(speaking about a regional meeting the Academy hosted)

"I was totally impressed by what the other speakers did in working with the Carlmont Academy students. Carlmont and its professional staff of teachers, counselors, students, as well as community outreach people such as Richard Villareal are doing an excellent job. You did a beautiful job of organizing the event.

-Carolyn Jung, Cañada College Professor & Tech Prep Coordinator

"...KUDOS to you all Academy Carlmont Team, we are very proud to have you showcase your excellent programs."

-Dr. Francisca Miranda, Sequoia Union High School District, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services

"I just want to thank you again for a TERRIFIC CPA Regional Meeting. It was great and I know that all who attended got so much out of it because you covered so many different topics. Every year the Regional Meetings get better and better, and you have set the standard for northern CA. Thanks so much, and thank your team."

-Barbara Weiss, California Department of Education, Secondary, Post Secondary & Adult Leadership Division

 What Students Are Saying

"I just wanted to let you know that I'm graduating with "Cum Laude" from Chico State with a bachelors in Psychology.  During college I have been Vice President, events coordinator, and community service officer for the psychology honors society.  I am attending a three-year grad school program next fall to be a school psychologist.  Rob and I are still together and doing great.  He is going to school and working full-time as a counselor/guardian for an adolescent boys group home.  His major is History and he thinks he may want to be a teacher.  We just wanted to thank you for being great teachers and helping us through high school." -Nicole Disney & Rob Holden, class of 2002

Here is what our students are saying about Job Journey, a curriculum designed to meet the needs of our Academy students as they begin to venture out into the workforce.

I wanted to thank you for the "Job Journey" lessons and the support. I just recieved a call today from the Disney Store manager saying that, "They would like to offer me an opportunity to be a part of their cast."

The top five qualities helped me explain myself and I learned how to talk and dress for the interview.

Thank you!  Rebekah Ransohoff - Class of 2009
