Carlmont High School takes the responsibility of student safety very seriously.

We have an emergency plan in place and staff is instructed on emergency procedures every year. We have a safety committee that meets at least once a month.

We conduct at least two drills per year as required by law. We attempt to have at least four drills a year.

As a member of the Safe Schools Committee, I meet with the surrounding schools and the Belmont Police Department to discuss school safety.

As a parent, you have an important role to play in working with Carlmont during an emergency.

It is important that you adhere to the following procedures when you hear of an emergency at Carlmont High School.

In the case of a school emergency-what parents should do:

Preparedness begins at home:

Develop and practice a family disaster plan and discuss with your student(s) what your role will be if Carlmont experiences an emergency.

Have your students memorize important family information: name, address and phone numbers.

In regards to the school, please follow these instructions:

DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL - Turn your radio to KCBS 740 to get information of a pending emergency in the area. Our school phone lines must be kept open for emergency communication and Administration and staff will be busy assuring the safety of your student(s) and should not have to be answering calls from parents during an emergency.

DO NOT DRIVE TO THE SCHOOL- Parents cars could seriously impede the ability of emergency vehicles responding to our call to get to and onto our campus.  Your students need to understand that you are not going to be immediately coming to the school to retrieve them.

STAY AT HOME OR AT WORK- Once you have left your house or place of employment it becomes increasingly difficult for us to be in communication with you and you may get stranded or injured yourself on the way.

WHEN IT IS SAFE TO TRAVEL TO THE SCHOOL- Carlmont will set up a student release center when your student is allowed to leave.  Please do not remove any student from campus unless you are listed on the emergency release form.  Our staff and Administration will be attempting to account for all students at all times.  When you are arrive at the school to retrieve your student(s) please make sure that you have signed them out so that we are assured that they were accounted for and left safely with the appropriate guardian.

Following these instructions will assist us at Carlmont High School in implementing and conducting an effective emergency procedure should one occur at Carlmont High School.

Please sign up for our “Rapid Notify” emergency text alert system on our website. In the event of a serious incident on campus you will automatically receive a text message and/or phone message on the numbers that you provide us.  Look for this “Rapid Notify” entry form at the bottom of any Carlmont website page.

Text Messaging Alert System

The Belmont Safe Schools Text Messaging Alert System, allows students, parents, relatives & school staff to receive important messages from their school or from Belmont PD, over their mobile devices (cell phone, smart phone, PDA, etc...). The system can be used to advise of school closures, traffic issues, and incidents on or near campus, etc... Because it is a text message, which goes to a mobile device, subscribers can receive the message if they are in class, the library, their dorm/apt or off campus. Subscribers sign up at their school's website and are in the system until they remove themselves, so for example, an incoming student and their family only have to sign up once during their years as a student at that school. Subscribers can remove themselves at any time. This system received initial funding from the City of Belmont as part of its Disaster Preparedness efforts and is maintained through the Belmont Safe Schools Program.
