Friends of Millard Fillmore |

Friends of Millard Fillmore is a club that
competes in a local area annual trivia hunt. This hunt usually consists
of teams from about ten local schools, both private and public. The
hunt was created by retired Carlmont faculty member Bob Hunter to teach
students research skills in a fun and competitive way. It has been
taking place every February for the last 39 years.
Here's how
it works: at 3:30 pm on a Friday, teams all meet at Carlmont High
School. Many teams dress up in costumes or matching hats for the event.
This event is known as "THE Bonus Round" because a mini trivia quiz is held
and Millard Fillmore's birthday cake is given to the winning team. At
this time all the hunt questions are read and explained. Occasionally there is a visit from President Millard Fillmore and his wife during the evening. The packets of questions are distributed and students RUN off
to answer as many of them as they can with double bibliographic
documentation before they are due to be turned in Sunday evening. For
every minute a team is late in turning in their questions, they are
docked points. On Monday at 3:30 all teams meet again at Carlmont High
School for "Adjudication" where "readers" and "lawyers" from each
school debate the answers.
On
January 24, 1998, Dr. Bob Hunter "Graduated" from Carlmont, after
being a Top Scot for 38 years! As resident Carlmont historian,
he has shared many stories with us over the years. He came to
Carlmont as a U.S. History teacher in 1959, and throughout the
years he has worn many hats: Teacher, Student Activities Director,
Class Advisor, Budget Director, and Administrative Vice Principal,
to name a few. He has been an invaluable guide to staff, students,
and parents as they have tried to navigate the halls of Carlmont.
He has provided many answers to Prom planners, Grad Night committees,
Homecoming organizers....and the list goes on....and on. -- Happy
fishing Dr. Hunter!
Join us for the 40th annual Hunt on Friday, February 1, 2008 - Dr. Hunter's retirement year as Huntmaster. Mark your calendar.
