Dear Parents, Students and Community:

Thank you for your interest in Carlmont High School. You may have heard that Carlmont is "on the move." It's true, and let me share some thoughts on the reasons for the progress and enthusiasm.

Academics

Carlmont serves all students, pushing each individual to strive to reach his or her highest potential. Very bright and motivated students are challenged with a rigorous program and will find equal, strong, competitive, colleagues at Carlmont. There is a wide variety of AP (Advanced Placement) and AS (Advanced Standing) classes. Students who are intelligent but no so motivated are urged to high achievement. There are no "low level" classes at Carlmont. Students needing assistance are helped in support classes and programs, not with "watered down" curriculum. Excellent teachers, who are passionate about their disciplines, engage student interest and increase their knowledge.

Extracurricular Activities

Carlmont offers a wide range of social, cultural, musical and athletic activities. A large variety of activities are available as students spend lunchtime on campus under our "closed campus" policy. A number of the athletic teams have brought home CCS championships. It's still possible to play a sport even if you're not a "star" athlete. School spirit and pride are stronger than at any time in the past 20 years. Ask our graduates who have returned to Carlmont as teachers!

Preparation for College and Beyond

Carlmont academics equal focused learning. We offer excellent guidance programs through a dynamic, full time college advisor. However, preparing your child for college goes beyond providing study skills, imparting a body of knowledge, and assisting with college applications. Gaining confidence on a campus of 2,000 academically, ethically and economically diverse students is itself a very meaningful preparation for college. Carlmont is the real world - the one in which your children will go to college well prepared, and, ultimately, the one in which they will live and work.

Sense of Community

Sitting on the San Carlos-Belmont border, Carlmont is a truly community high school. Historically, it has had strong support from Belmont and Redwood Shores, and has recently experienced a three-fold increase in San Carlos students under the District's Open Enrollment Policy. Our East Palo Alto families continue to choose Carlmont because of its offerings and welcoming attitude. Most students live relatively close geographically, making after-school sports and weekend socializing convenient. As such, parents can get to know their children's friends as well as the friends' family. Parents are welcome and, in fact, are a familiar site on campus, working in the student store, offices and classrooms, as well as participating in all aspects of school governance and visioning.

A Place for All

Carlmont welcomes and nurtures our students. Carlmont emphasizes academic achievement as well as personal values in educating the mind, spirit and body. We recognize each student's individuality and hence, they discover and develop their special talents, gaining the skills and self-confidence that will enable them to be life-long learners and leaders. Carlmont is a school of tradition blended with current academic research to give our students the best of all educational opportunities. Carlmont offers a fit for everyone, even those that might feel they'd "stick out" at another school. At Carlmont, a person's value is not connected to his or her economic or cultural status. We are an "inclusive" rather than "exclusive" school - proud to produce students of compassion, intelligence, tolerance, and self-reliance. I'm pleased to say, "Our students are connected and happy." In the words of the regional school accreditation team, "Carlmont has many systems in place to ensure that the school is a safe, clean, and orderly environment for students and learning."

Drive by Carlmont. You will get a glimpse of the improvements to the facilities. Stop by. You are always welcome. Talk to the students, teachers and parents. Feel the enthusiasm. All in all, Carlmont gets better the closer you look.
