Work Experience & Work Permits
Aquiring a Work Permit

A Work Permit is a verification of your age, birth date, enrollment, and attendance in school that you are required (by California labor laws) to provide to your employer. All minors under the age of 18 who are employed must have a work permit to be lawfully employeed (exceptions: occasional babysitting, yardwork, domestic work).

Where do I apply for a work permit?

At the Work Experience Office at Carlmont High School during the regular school year; at the administration/counseling offices in your high school after school is out in June and in August and before school opens in August/September; at the Sequoia District Office, 480 James Avenue in Redwood City, during the month of July.

What do I need to get a work permit?

  • A job or promise of employment
  • An application (See No. 3 above)
  • Verification of your age and birth date through school records, drivers license or your birth or baptismal certificate.
  • A Social Security number

How Do I Get A Work Permit?

  • Get an application (See No. 3 above)
  • Complete your portion with your name, age, birth date, Social Security number, etc.
  • Have your employer complete the section about the job; wages, hours, Worker's Compensation Insurance, etc.
  • Have your parents sign the application.
  • Return the application tto the appropriate office.

What do I do with the work permit once I receive it?

Take it to your employer. The employer is required to have a Work Permit on file for all minors employed.

What is the purpose of the work permit?

It verifies your age for the employer and enables the employer to comply with State and Federal labor laws.

Do I need a new work permit if I get another job?

Yes. A new Work Permit must be secured for each and every job held by a minor under the age of 18. The same procedure is followed in each case to get a Work Permit. If you have two jobs, you need two Work Permits.

How long does it take to get a work permit?

It will take from 1-2 days after you return completed application, depending on the word load in the office at the time.

Can my work permit be taken away from me?

Yes. Poor attendance/grades will result in loss of Work Permit.

Text Messaging Alert System

The Belmont Safe Schools Text Messaging Alert System, allows students, parents, relatives & school staff to receive important messages from their school or from Belmont PD, over their mobile devices (cell phone, smart phone, PDA, etc...). The system can be used to advise of school closures, traffic issues, and incidents on or near campus, etc... Because it is a text message, which goes to a mobile device, subscribers can receive the message if they are in class, the library, their dorm/apt or off campus. Subscribers sign up at their school's website and are in the system until they remove themselves, so for example, an incoming student and their family only have to sign up once during their years as a student at that school. Subscribers can remove themselves at any time. This system received initial funding from the City of Belmont as part of its Disaster Preparedness efforts and is maintained through the Belmont Safe Schools Program.
