Work Experience & Work Permits |
|
|
|
Page 1 of 2 Work experience is a semester (10 variable credits) course that can be taken for no more than 2 years (40 variable credits maximum). Variable credit means credits received depends on hours worked. The more hours worked, the more credit you receive. Credits received are considered Practical Arts credit.
Credits are earned on the basis of one unit for every 36 units verified working hours at an acceptable job site. A maximum of 10 units per semester and 20 units per year can be earned. Of course, it will be necessary to get passing grades form both the employer and the Work Experience Coordinator in order to obtain credit(s). Verified hours means that hours must be documented. The Work Experience Program is designed to help teens acquire work experience and income, while safeguarding scholastic advancement and physical ell-being. Students must be at least 16 years old to sign-up for Work Experience. The State of California requires that the following conditions be met before credit can be awarded: - JOB - Be employed at an acceptable work position. Cannot be paid in cash, unless receive check stub indicating withholding taxes. Stub must be presented to employee or coordinator upon request. Cannot be a private contractor. If you have any questions, you must ask the Work Experience Coordinator.
- ATTENDANCE - Demonstrate acceptable class attendance by attending one class per week which translates into 18 classes per semester. All absences must be made up or you will receive an Incomplete or No Credit. Non-attendance will be cause for being dropped from the Work Experience Program. Classes are held Monday at lunch in room D-8. If you miss a class, you must see Mr. Newton n room D-5 during the week to explain your absence. At the end of the grading period, your attendance record must be perfect to receive credit.
- WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS - Complete one acceptable written assignment per week. The curriculum for this course is to learn laws, behavior, etiquette, and your rights in the business world. Some self-evaluation will also be included.
- GRADING - Grades are based on the quality and completeness of the weekly assignments, and the final employer evaluation f the student's job performance. (50% employer evaluation, 30% weekly assignments, 20% class participation) In lieu of the letter grades, a student may elect to receive a CR or NC grade evaluation. This election must be made before the first quarter grading period, and if the student is under the age of 18, parental approval must be obtained on the proper form.
- EMPLOYER EVALUATION - A semester written evaluation of work performance, with a grade, must be signed by a job supervisor and on file in the work experience office before credit can be awarded. The Work Experience Coordinator will visit your job and talk with your supervisor once each semester. Forms are usually left behind and are YOUR responsibility to return the forms to the teacher. (Evaluations should be reviewed with the student by the employer) Any problems on the job should be discussed with the Work Experience Coordinator.
- TIME CARDS - Time sheets are issued by the Work Experience Office and must be turned in every 6 weeks. Sheets must be properly documented and signed by work supervisor. Attention must be given to accuracy and neatness of sheets. Hours are to be rounded off to the nearest half-hour. Number of hours worked will be taken from these sheets in order to determine your credits.
