Student newspapers in the Sequoia district Print E-mail

The faculty, staff and administration of the Sequoia district are driven by a commitment to providing students with a high quality education and robust high school experience.  As part of that commitment, student newspapers are passionately supported, and, throughout the District, there is a shared advocacy for student rights to free speech and a free press.

Carlmont High School has supported the Scots Express, the school’s student newspaper, for many years, and we are fully committed to revitalizing the paper as soon as we again have a teacher to mentor the student journalists.  We were disappointed by the need this month to temporarily suspend the Scots Express, but we believe that a teacher-advisor is critically needed to support students in producing the newspaper and to ensure students are taught the principles, ethics and professional practices of journalism. We look forward to the return of Scots Express as early as the start of the spring semester.

We are well under way with the process of identifying a teacher-advisor for the newspaper, and we are currently working with practicing journalists in our community who have offered to support us in this endeavor.  After fulfilling our immediate goal of getting the Scots Express up and running once again, we are planning to form a task force - comprising internal and external experts - that will address student newspapers, in general, and student newspapers in the Sequoia district in particular.

Text Messaging Alert System

The Belmont Safe Schools Text Messaging Alert System, allows students, parents, relatives & school staff to receive important messages from their school or from Belmont PD, over their mobile devices (cell phone, smart phone, PDA, etc...). The system can be used to advise of school closures, traffic issues, and incidents on or near campus, etc... Because it is a text message, which goes to a mobile device, subscribers can receive the message if they are in class, the library, their dorm/apt or off campus. Subscribers sign up at their school's website and are in the system until they remove themselves, so for example, an incoming student and their family only have to sign up once during their years as a student at that school. Subscribers can remove themselves at any time. This system received initial funding from the City of Belmont as part of its Disaster Preparedness efforts and is maintained through the Belmont Safe Schools Program.
